Guide
How to be a good accountability partner
A good accountability partner checks in regularly, celebrates progress, nudges without lecturing, and is honest about their own goals too. The best partnerships agree on clear daily actions and a fixed length, then make checking in effortless, for example with a shared app like DuoShare.
Nine rules
- Agree on specific daily actions, not vague outcomes.
- Pick a length: 7, 30 or 66 days.
- Check in daily; talk weekly.
- Celebrate check-ins, not just results.
- Nudge, do not nag. “Your turn” beats “You missed again.”
- Be honest about your own misses.
- Expect bad days; plan for them with an N/A day.
- Never shame. Accountability is support, not judgment.
- Renew or end it on purpose when the challenge finishes.
What to say when they miss
- “Want to do a short one tonight?”
- “Tomorrow counts. I will check in first.”
- “How can I make it easier this week?”
